Kōrero: Country schooling

The annual visit of the school inspector was often dreaded by teachers and pupils, as children had to pass an exam before moving up to the next class. This 1890 report by Mr Gow on South Canterbury’s Hakataramea School was published in the local newspaper – a common practice. It shows the pass and fail rate, and the range of subjects taught in small primary schools.
