Evolutionary relationships between organisms are often represented as a tree, with common ancestors at the base of the trunk and the most recently evolved species at the branch tips. Scientists recognise three main branches or domains in the tree of life – bacteria, archaea (which includes heat- and acid-loving organisms found in hot pools) and eucarya (which includes plants and animals).
