E whakaatu ana tēnei mahere whenua i ngā rohe e hari ana i ngā kawa e rua. I te kawa o te pāeke, ka taki tūtū ngā kaikōrero o te tangata whenua; kātahi anō ka tūtū mai ērā o te manuhiri. I te kawa o te tauutuutu (te kawa tū mai, tū atu), he whakautuutu ngā kōrero a te tangata whenua me te manuhiri. Ko ngā iwi ka heke mai i ngā waka o Te Arawa me Tainui ka whai i tēnei kawa.
