Defence organisation chart

Defence organisation chart

This chart shows how the command and management of the New Zealand armed forces is organised. Political authority is provided by the cabinet and the minister of defence. Below this is the Ministry of Defence and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) – the separation of these two bodies is unique to New Zealand. Advice is often provided jointly to the minister by the secretary of defence and the chief of defence force. The Capability Management Board oversees the development of the military capability of the armed forces and is responsible for obtaining and disposing of military equipment.
