The long head is usually run on a steep hill. A heading dog is sent out to a distance of up to 800 metres to bring three sheep back to the dog handler, in as direct a line as possible. Points are awarded for the run out and head, then for the ‘lift’ and pull. The run has to be completed within a specified time – usually between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the course.
