Clarence Beeby, 1984 (2 o 2)

Clarence Beeby, 1984

Nevile Lodge's cartoon of Clarence Beeby ('Beeb') was commissioned by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) to mark their 50th anniversary in 1984. Beeb was the first NZCER executive officer, from 1934 to 1938. The NZCER plinth is on a base marked Carnegie, indicating the importance of the Carnegie Corporation funding to its work. Beeb stands on a stack of NZCER published books: The University of New Zealand by J. C. Beaglehole; An experiment in self-government by L. J. Wild; The school looks at life by J. E. Strahan; and Littledene by H. C. D. Somerset. In his left hand he holds notes from the New Education Fellowship Conference and in his right, the book Entrance to the university, which he co-authored.
