Kōrero: Coat of arms

This December 2009 cartoon altered a few features in the New Zealand coat of arms in reference to a controversial government decision to permit the tino rangatiratanga (Māori self-determination) flag to be flown officially on Waitangi Day. In the cartoonist’s coat of arms, the Māori flag is held by a smiling Māori chief, while the European female holding the official New Zealand flag looks quite disgruntled.
