In 1958 Labour Minister of Finance Arnold Nordmeyer released a budget that raised the price of petrol, beer and cigarettes. This was widely unpopular and became known as the 'black budget'. This 1958 cartoon shows Nordmeyer as a garage attendant supplying 'Nordiegas' to an enraged farmer. Prime Minister Walter Nash, who was often out of the country in this period, stands alongside eating acid drops, a favoured sweet.
