The second Labour government: pain at the pump

In 1958 Labour Minister of Finance Arnold Nordmeyer released a Budget that raised the price of petrol, beer and cigarettes. This was widely unpopular and became known as the 'Black Budget'. This cartoon shows Nordmeyer as a garage attendant supplying 'Nordiegas' to an enraged farmer. Prime Minister Walter Nash leans against the petrol pump eating acid drops, a sharp-tasting sweet.
