Following the discovery of gold in Central Otago in 1861, many thousands of miners left the Victorian goldfields and travelled to Otago. Many suffered from the unusually harsh winter weather of 1862. This cartoon from the Melbourne Punch in March 1863 shows miners, heavily clothed, departing for Dunedin, despite the prospect of an experience which was compared with spending winter on an iceberg.
