Not-so-private practice

Life insurers have always tried to identify customers whose risk of illness or death is higher than normal. Until recently they relied on medical certificates and doctors’ reports. As this 2007 cartoon shows, some companies demand access to patients’ confidential medical files before they will agree to cover them or pay out on claims. This has raised concerns about breaches of privacy.
