From 1993 until 2008 the value of the New Zealand dollar rose against other currencies. By 2007 it was buying 75 US cents (as compared with under 50 cents in the previous decade). This meant that imports were cheaper and foreign travel was more affordable for New Zealanders. But it also became more difficult for exporters since the price of New Zealand goods became more expensive to people overseas – leading this ex-exporter to become a porter.
