Kōrero: Overseas trade policy

This March 1958 cartoon from the Taranaki Daily News depicts Britain as an elderly fellow talking to the young New Zealander about the hard-nosed nature of business. Out the window cranes are loading produce from other countries – not including New Zealand. On the wall are reminders of New Zealand’s recent sacrifices for Britain. At the time New Zealand was struggling to gain access for all of its butter exports to Britain, while Britain was increasingly looking to trade with nearby Europe.
