Minister of Finance Arnold Nordmeyer is pictured here as a gremlin irking the beer drinker, smoker, motorist and married man with children. His 1958 Budget doubled taxes on beer and cigarettes, and increased the sales taxes on cars and petrol. It also cancelled a promised £100 (equivalent to more than $5,000 in 2021) tax rebate. Labour was duly thrown out of office at the 1960 election.
