As more British people settled in New Zealand they began to draw distinctions between themselves and recent arrivals or visitors. One concept which took off in the second half of the 19th century was that of the ‘old chum’ who was rich in ‘colonial experience’, and the ‘new chum’ who was physically inept. This cartoon from the New Zealand Graphic of 1899 mocks the unfortunate newcomer.
