Tough sheep for tough conditions

Tough sheep for tough conditions

By the 1940s, farmers in the North Island hill country were complaining that the then-fashionable Romneys were not hardy enough. Animal scientists and some breeders set out to improve them so they could handle the tough conditions, and one result was the Perendale breed. This cartoon by Nevile Lodge is a wry take on the effort to breed ‘tough’ sheep.
