Bronze whalers are found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide, but they were first described from New Zealand waters, and for a while were known as New Zealand whalers. Often seen in shallow water, bronze whalers sometimes chase kahawai. Large schools of these sharks, sometimes in their hundreds, are seen near New Zealand’s northern harbour mouths in late spring, when pupping occurs. They are nearly 3 metres long.
