Kōrero: Painting

After his graduation from the Canterbury School of Art, Pat Hanly spent six years in Europe, where he soaked himself in European modernism. Returning to New Zealand in 1962, he was determined to reconnect with the Pacific environment. His response was a series of paintings with bright colours, especially the blues of sea and sky, and hard edges. 'Pacific condition' was a work of enamel on board in this spirit, which Hanly completed in 1976.
