Colin McCahon moved to Auckland from Christchurch in 1953 and went to live in Titirangi, in a small house surrounded by trees, with large kauri trees growing nearby. These influences were quickly reflected in his paintings, which drew on the colours and shapes of the kauri and became more geometric and cubist than in his earlier painting.
