Kōrero: Painting

Christopher Perkins was another art teacher on the La Trobe scheme who came to the Wellington Technical School of Art in 1929 and stayed four years. From early in his stay he proposed the view that New Zealand should develop its own artistic traditions, aided by the quality of its 'marvellous light'. His painting of Mt Taranaki, which he completed in 1931, became the best example of his ideas, with the sharp lines of the dairy factory positioned against the distinctive outline of the mountain.
