This illustration by Dennis Turner is from Auckland psychologist Arthur Edward Manning's The bodgie: a study in abnormal psychology, published in 1958. In 1950s New Zealand and Australia there were moral panics over young men ('bodgies') and women ('widgies') – youths supposedly addicted to sex, booze, cigarettes and outlandish clothing. Manning interviewed bodgies and widgies in New Zealand and Australia, 15 from each country. While he took a sympathetic approach, he still concluded that these young people were juvenile delinquents.
