This illustration was included in Walter Gudgeon’s collection of biographical portraits entitled The defenders of New Zealand. It was published in 1887 and presented the colony’s military leaders in largely heroic mould. The book's subtitle was 'being a short biography of colonists who distinguished themselves in upholding her majesty's supremacy in these islands'. Gudgeon had himself been active in the New Zealand wars as an officer with the Wanganui Native Contingent and then with the Armed Constabulary. He later became a judge of the Native Land Court. Gudgeon also wrote two other historical works on the New Zealand wars: Reminiscences of the war in New Zealand (1879) and The history and doings of the Maoris (1885). All three volumes were published under the name of his father, Thomas Gudgeon.
