This image was opposite the title page of the first edition of Lady Barker's Station life in New Zealand. Mary Anne Barker's classic account of pioneering in Canterbury was first published by Macmillan in London in 1870, and soon after by other publishers in Leipzig and Coburg in Germany, and in New York and Paris. It was not published in New Zealand until a century later, in 1970.
