This portrait of Carbine was painted by Frederick Woodhouse in 1889. Carbine, born in 1885, was New Zealand's first undisputed champion. Bred at Sylvia Park Stud, Auckland, he was sold for 620 guineas and won his first five races as a two-year-old in New Zealand. He then went to Australia and changed hands for 3,000 guineas. He was only once unplaced in 43 starts (when a heel binding came loose), winning 33 times. Carbine's most extraordinary victory was in the 1890 Melbourne Cup, when he carried the equivalent of 66 kilograms, and won in record time against 38 opponents. In 2012 that weight had never been bettered. When Carbine sailed from Australia on his retirement to stud in England, thousands of fans gathered on the wharf to see him off.
