Māori state house design

For most of the 20th century there was little attempt to design houses that accommodated Māori cultural values. In the early 2000s Housing New Zealand, the state social housing provider, commissioned architects to design such houses. They included this home, which strongly demarcates washing and eating areas and has extra room for guests, and whose low-pitched gable evokes a traditional whare.
