Kōrero: Cooking

This rather bleak 1840s watercolour shows the challenges of cooking a meal outdoors over an open fire. The earliest European missionaries and settlers would have cooked this way. Here, two surveyors are attempting to cook food in a billy, with their job made difficult by driving rain and wind. The chap on the left is trying to create shelter with his hat, though the falling rain suggests the wind was coming from the opposite direction.
