Kōrero: Political values

Rural paradise

Image
Rural paradise

Charlotte Beatrice Youmans’ painting of a rural scene, possibly in the Hutt Valley outside of Wellington, depicts a pastoral idyll of the colonial period. Settlers sought to transplant the British way of life, with many of its values (such as democracy, the rule of law and individual enterprise) but without its rigid class distinctions, into a new South Pacific setting.
