Revising the coat of arms: reworked design

During the late 1940s and early 1950s both Labour and National governments contemplated updating the country’s coat of arms. This is one design that was considered but not adopted. Jock McEwen of the Māori Affairs Department pointed out that ‘a feather in the hair is an absolute “must” from the point of view of the Maori race.’
