The Bensemann name has a long history in Nelson, originating with early German settlers. Leo Bensemann spent most of his life in Christchurch but was drawn back to the landscapes of his childhood as he grew older. His East Tākaka oil painting, completed in 1969, depicts the fluted hills behind East Tākaka and the valley farmlands with their distinctive tōtara trees and karst outcrops.
