This George Channing watercolour shows the Nelson house of Edward Stafford, possibly in Haven Road, in the 1860s. Stafford bought the house from the New Zealand Company in 1849. In 1846 he had married the daughter of William Wakefield, the chief agent of the New Zealand Company. Stafford was the first superintendent of Nelson province, from 1853 to 1855, and went on to become premier of New Zealand.
