Frances Hodgkins, born in Dunedin, left New Zealand to study art in London and eventually settled in England. She was influenced by modern expressionist ideas, and when a group of intellectuals in Christchurch purchased this painting and presented it to the city for their collection, the offer was initially rejected on the grounds that the painting was too modernist.
