Kōrero: Building trades

This drawing by William Strutt shows six men building a small wooden hut (commonly called a whare) in Taranaki around 1855. At this time the main tools used by carpenters were axes, chisels and saws. Pioneer chimneys were often made of tree-fern trunks (as carried by the man second from left), lashed together and heavily plastered with clay.
