In the early 1860s John Gully painted 12 watercolours of South Island mountains and glaciers, including this one, from sketches by geologist and explorer Johann Franz Julius von Haast. These paintings were used to illustrate a lecture given by Haast to the Royal Geographical Society, London, in 1864.
