Hōreke, Hokianga

This view of Hōreke, on the Hokianga Harbour, was painted some years after the Scots David Ramsay and Gordon Browne had established a shipbuilding settlement there. Shipbuilder and fellow Scot David Clarke supervised the construction of three large vessels – the schooner Enterprise, the brigantine New Zealander, and the barque Sir George Murray – at Hōreke between 1826 and 1830.
