Most New Zealanders did not care about the lack of street life in cities because they did most of their living in the surrounding suburbs, where they could garden, maintain houses and cars, or tinker in backyard workshops. This 1972 cartoon gently mocks the phenomenon where, in a reversal of big cities overseas, the city dweller has to go to town to find peace.
