In the 1960s and 1970s artist Colin Wheeler produced several successful books illustrating historic sheep stations of New Zealand. This painting is of Ngāmatea, a large station in the centre of the North Island. The popularity of Wheeler’s paintings suggested that rural mythology remained strong.
