Although fire could be at times a curse for Canterbury pioneers like Laurence Kennaway, during a winter snowstorm a warming fire might have been welcomed. This sketch is from Kennaway’s Crusts, an autobiographical account of pioneering in mid-Canterbury in the 1850s. He records how after a six-hour trudge through the snow, he was unable to get a fire started when he reached the hut.
