Māori fishing pā

Māori fishing pā

This watercolour by Joseph Osbertus Hamley from about 1864, shows a fishing near Hāwera, south Taranaki. The pā would have been used for fishing by a group of local Māori at certain times of the year, but a different group (whānau or hapū) may well have had the rights to use the land nearby.
