This etching of an orange tree at Dent’s orchard, Whangārei, was the frontispiece of George Alderton’s 1884 Treatise and handbook of orange-culture in Auckland, New Zealand. Alderton grew citrus and grapes near Whangārei, and investigated citrus growing overseas for the New Zealand government. In the 1920s he led a scheme to develop Kerikeri as the centre of the citrus and subtropical fruit-growing industry.
