Kōrero: The New Zealand bush

This work by Richard Daintree (made between 1864 and 1870) is a photograph overpainted in oils. Much of the Australian countryside had scattered gum trees, as here. ‘The bush’ was not forest, but park-like woodland in which people could picnic in the sun. Before long, in Australia the word became a synonym for ‘the backblocks’.
