The solid line shows the route taken by Ferdinand Hochstetter’s party in the central North Island, in 1858–59. The dotted lines in the upper part of the map show his earlier explorations of Auckland.
The 22-man party included Hochstetter, Haast, Charles Heaphy, Bruno Hamel (photographer), Augustus Koch (artist-curator) and 15 Māori porters. They partly retraced the route Dieffenbach had taken 18 years before, but Hochstetter concentrated on geology and produced the first geological map of the region.
