Story: Waikato region

Waikare Estate map

Allotments for sale are shown on this colourful 1883 map of the Waikare Estate near Rangiriri. Transport links including the railway and river steamers are depicted for the information of buyers. Large estates were established in Waikato after many military settlers walked off or sold their swampy, inaccessible land. However, developing the estates was costly, and by the 1890s most had failed financially.
