Muriwai was the sister of Toroa, captain of the Mataatua canoe, and her name is given to this cave at Whakatāne where the sacred talisman from the Mataatua was placed. When her two children drowned near Tauranga, Muriwai placed a prohibition on the coastline from Ngā Kuri a Whārei to Tihirau. These boundaries were later used to define the Bay of Plenty.
