Princess Piki, later the Māori queen, Dame Te Ataraingikaahu, walks beside Queen Elizabeth II on an historic occasion at Tūrangawaewae marae on 30 December 1953. The Māori king, Korokī, leads the way, with Prince Philip behind him. This was the first time an English monarch had visited the marae, and signalled a new spirit of mutual respect and recognition.
