The electric fence, developed in the late 1930s by Waikato inventor Bill Gallagher, has many uses on the farm. Here it is used to allocate feed when dairy cows are dry in winter. Bill Gallagher and his brothers Henry and Vivian manufactured electric fence units at Gallagher Engineering in Hamilton from the 1940s. The invention became very popular with farmers, both within New Zealand and overseas.
