From Melbourne to Dunedin

After gold was found in Otago in 1861, miners came in large numbers to the province from Victoria, Australia, where mining had thrived for a decade. Merchants from Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo followed and made Dunedin the business centre of Otago’s goldfields.
