‘Bridges of Hamilton city’

‘Bridges of Hamilton city’

‘Bridges of Hamilton city’, a woodcut by Campbell Smith, shows four of the bridges spanning the Waikato: Fairfield, Whitiora, Claudelands and Victoria. The artist, who is a former Fairfield College art teacher and Waikato Museum director, said of this image: ‘The bridges reflect our cultural history, ranging from the elegant Victoria Bridge built in 1910 and snake-like concrete waves of the Fairfield Bridge from 1937 through to the modern bridges of today. This print is emblematic of the city’s emerging sense of pride in its distinct identity and river heritage.’ (‘A printmaker’s tale.’ Waikato Museum, http://www.waikatomuseum.co.nz/news/pageid/2145836134 (last accessed 12 April 2010))
