Before climbing the mountain

In February 1890, 77-year-old ex-premier William Fox climbed Taranaki Maunga in an 18½-hour marathon. The party included the guide Harry Peters, painter Edith Halcombe, and New Plymouth mayor Arthur Standish and his daughter. Before the climb, Fox recorded their camp at what is today the North Egmont Visitor Centre.
