Pasture has replaced much of the original forest of Taranaki. Dairy cows dominate the region, and milk products dominate its economy. The impact of the dairy industry on the environment is sometimes controversial – dairy effluent can pollute waterways, and the intensification of the industry has put pressure on the water table.
