The volcanic peak of Taranaki Maunga (Mt Taranaki) dominates the region’s skyline, and is responsible for the moist climate and fertile soils. Māori have long revered the mountain, and its image is used in many facets of Taranaki life – logos, advertisements, sports-club badges, corporate letterheads, and even on gravestones. Here the mountain’s northern slopes are seen from the alpine grasslands of the Pouākai Range.
