This coloured lithograph from a sketch by Mrs Wicksteed, the wife of a New Zealand Company agent, was printed in E. J. Wakefield’s Adventure in New Zealand in 1845. It is a romanticised image designed to entice British pioneers to Taranaki. The first New Zealand Company settlers had arrived in 1841, and looked with longing on Te Āti Awa’s fertile lands.
